Student objectives:
1. Develop surgical expertise in complex arthroscopic & reconstructive surgeries of the shoulder, elbow & knee.
2. Achieve clinical competency in the diagnosis, physical examination, imaging, surgical and non-surgical management, and rehabilitation of sports medicine disorders.
3. Acquire interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their families, and allied health professionals.
4. Develop and refine critical and scholarly skills in the methodological aspects of applied clinical and health systems research. The specific skill domains include: research synthesis, research design, data gathering, knowledge translation, data-analysis and interpretation, communication of research results (oral & written), selection and development of measurement tools, and grant application.
Student responsibilities:
Clinical competency exposure:
1. SHOULDER (minimally invasive all arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery [PASTA, double row, suprascapular nerve decompression], instability [SLAP, HAGL, interval closure, biceps tenodesis, Latarjet, 360 deg labral repair], anatomic CC ligament reconstruction, complex trauma (4 part fracture dislocations and complete spectrum of fracture care – scapula, IM nailing, locking plates, fracture hemiarthroplasty/reverse TSA) and reconstruction (hemiarthroplasty, meniscal allograft,total shoulder/reverse arthroplasty)
2. ELBOW (arthroscopy [OCD, OATS, capsular release, ulnohumeral arthroplasty], instability (Tommy John, PLRI, multiligament/hinge elbow), complex trauma (terrible triad, Monteggia, and full spectrum of fracture care) and reconstruction (osteotomy, hemiarthroplasty and total elbow arthroplasty, radial head arthroplasty)
3. KNEE (ACL reconstructions [primary & revisions, anteromedial, hamstring, BTB, all inside, double bundle], meniscal repair [all inside, outside in, meniscal transplant], PCL/MCL/PLC/Multiligament reconstruction, patella instability [arthroscopic repair/MPFL recon/ tibial tuberosity transfer], cartilage restoration [microfracture, OATS procedure, allograft], realignment procedures [HTO, distal femoral osteotomy].
Research:
Research focuses on clinical outcome studies and clinical trials of surgical procedures. The fellow will work closely with a research coordinator, a clinical epidemiologist, biostatistician, orthopaedic and sports medicine residents, sports medicine physicians, undergraduate students, kinesiologists, chiropractors and physiotherapists.
The student will be involved in the research process including literature review, data collection, analysis, manuscript preparation and presentation at national and international meetings. Resources including protected research time, financing, research assistants, biostatistician, a 3Dmotion analysis lab, and administrative support are available.
There are manystudents rotating through the service providing an opportunity to observe and participate in teaching. Multidisciplinary Sports Medicine rounds consisting of other surgeons, radiologists, family medicine residents, nurses, and therapists run every Thursday with case presentations in a Royal College exam format with review of the latest articles on the topic.
